flora
The climate of Arran, like many of the islands, is fairly
mild due to the influence of the Gulf Stream. As a result,
the island abounds in plant life all year round, with
most flowering plants to be found along the shore. In
the Spring you will see Wood Anemone, Marsh Marigold,
Lesser Celandine and Golden Saxifrage, followed by Ramsons,
Bluebell, Bugle and Pignut. In ealy Summer you will find
colonies of Yellow Iris, and by July Purple Loosestrife,
Valerian, Meadowsweet, Marsh Ragwort, and Hemp Agrimony
will be out. |

Inland on higher terrain you will
find Bilberry and Heather, Butterwort and Sundew, and
even on the tops of Arrans' hills you will see Dwarf
Willow, Alpine Ladys' Mantle, Mountain Sorrel, Roseroot
and Starry Saxifrage.
gardens
A 'must see' for plant lovers is Brodick Castle Gardens,
one of Scotland's finest examples of a woodland garden.
Although parts of it date from 1710, it was mostly laid
out in the Victorian era and was further modified in
the 1920's by the Dutchess of Montrose. The gardens
contain an enormous variety of ancient trees, plants
and shrubs, plus a nationally acclaimed collection of
rhododendrons.
